DESCRIPTION:Monday thru Friday\, August 4-8\, 9 AM to 12 PM daily.\nChildren entering grades 3-6 will explore Windsor history while having fun in a historical setting! Learn about Windsor’s people and their stories while “doing” history! Daily program themes build an understanding of Windsor’s diverse history from earliest times to the present day. \nMonday\, August 4\, The Quill is Mightier Than the Sword. Few things are as important to human history as the written word. Students will make their own ink\, practice writing with a quill\, and bind their own book using 18th-century techniques. \nTuesday\, August 5\, Fantastic Fibers. If life is a tapestry\, let’s weave it together! Part science\, part art\, textile work has been integral to cultures across the world. Students spin\, weave\, and dye fabric with plants from our garden. \nWednesday\, August 6\, Set in Stone. Explore ancient Palisado Cemetery. Meet the residents\, unearth the histories\, and discover the artistic motifs of the past. Students create a ‘death head’ stamp based off the carvings they spotted among the stones. \nThursday\, August 7\, Through the Lens of Time. A large part of Windsor Historical Society’s collection is the historic photo collection. In this program students look at unique pieces from the collection\, discover different photography methods throughout history\, try their hands at cyanotypes\, and make a camera obscura. \nFriday\, August 8\, Clay Creations. Windsor is a town built on clay\, literally. Students get their hands dirty\, process some clay\, make bricks\, clay dye a shirt\, and understand the many ways Windsor’s people worked and lived in the past! \nRegistration required by July 28th. $40 for one day or $160 for the week. SUMMARY:Juneteenth Firelight Reading: Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Venture Smith
DESCRIPTION:Event will be held indoors\, due to inclement weather. \nGather around the fire at Windsor Historical Society on June 19th at 7:30 pm to observe Juneteenth. On grounds once walked by people enslaved in Windsor\, share in an audience-led reading of Venture Smith’s personal account of his life of slavery and freedom in 19th-century Connecticut. \nVenture Smith was named Broteer when he was born circa 1730\, in West Africa. As a child\, he was taken captive and sold into slavery in America. For 25 years\, he worked\, enslaved\, on farms in Connecticut\, New York\, and Rhode Island. In 1775\, Smith bought his freedom. He then strove for the next decade to purchase the freedom of his wife and three children\, reuniting his family and building a home in Haddam Neck\, CT.  Venture Smith’s story exemplifies the themes of slavery and freedom that lie at the heart of Juneteenth\, a day of celebration\, but also a day of remembrance. \nTake part and read the words or just listen to learn. All are welcome around the fire. This program is free. Ages 10 +. \nThis event is at capacity.

DESCRIPTION:For ages 8-12. \nDid you know that the first ever book of photography was created by a woman? In 1843\, English botanist Anna Atkins published Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions\, the first book to be illustrated with photography. Atkins used a then-new and distinctively blue photography process called cyanotype to create her book. In this workshop\, students and interested parents will try their hand at making their own cyanotypes. \nThere will be two sessions offered\, one from 2 to 2:45 PM\, and the other from 3 to 3:45 PM. Both are for all students ages 8-12. \n$5. The film explores the history of the 29th Connecticut Regiment Volunteers\, the states’ first Black regiment who fought to end slavery during the American Civil War. \nThe screening will be accompanied by a talk on the Windsor men who served in the regiment\, including Virgil Simmons and William Chase. “To understand the Connecticut 29th is to understand the true significance of the Civil War to the people of Windsor\,” says Windsor Historical Society Program Manager\, Heather Lodge. “These men understood exactly what they were fighting for.” \nFREE

DESCRIPTION:Do you believe that history should be accessible to everyone? Can you read cursive? Then join us February 14th from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Windsor Senior Center to take part in the nationwide Douglass Day celebration! \nDouglass Day is celebrated each year on Frederick Douglass’s chosen birthday: February 14th. To honor his life’s work\, participants gather to transcribe documents from a Black history collection to help make them more widely accessible to researchers. \nMillions of original documents containing interesting and vital parts of history lay un-transcribed in archives around America\, and documents pertaining to Black history make up more than their share of unprocessed work. While un-transcribed\, these documents are less likely to appear in searches and are inaccessible to generations who cannot read cursive. Douglass Day is a call to collective action\, to help these documents reach the eyes of students\, researchers\, and amateur historians alike. \nThis year\, we will be transcribing the Library of Congress’ African American Perspectives Collection. In this collection are historic sermons and calls for political activism\, annual reports of charitable\, educational\, and political organizations\, college catalogs and graduation orations from HBCs\, biographies\, slave narratives\, speeches by members of Congress\, legal documents\, poetry\, playbills\, dramas\, and materials focusing segregation\, voting rights\, and anti-slavery organizations. And YOU CAN HELP bring these documents to life with your participation! \nThe Windsor Historical Society and Windsor Senior Center will co-host a transcribe-a-thon for all ages at the Senior Center. Along with transcribing\, participants will be able to take part virtually in national Douglas Day speeches\, readings\, and music. Participants must bring their own laptop or tablet\, but snacks and technical support will be provided. \nThis event is drop in\, drop out. DESCRIPTION:Come to the Windsor Historical Society on Saturday\, November 9th\, 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.\, for a screening and presentation on the Berlin Equity Action Team’s award-winning short film\, The 29th Connecticut Regiment and the Fight for Freedom. The film explores the history of the 29th Connecticut Regiment Volunteers\, the states’ first Black regiment who fought to end slavery during the American Civil War. \nThe event will begin with a screening of the documentary followed by a presentation by Chris Barlow of the Berlin Historical Society on the making of the film\, which won “Best Connecticut Film” at the 2023 Mystic Film Festival. Additional research on the men from Berlin and Windsor who served in the regiment\, including Virgil Simmons and William Chase\, will be presented after the showing. “To understand the Connecticut 29th is to understand the true significance of the Civil War to the people of Windsor\,” says Windsor Historical Society Program Manager\, Heather Lodge. “These men understood exactly what they were fighting for.” \n$10 Adult\, $8 Member/Senior\, $6 Child \nRegister here
