SUMMARY:Douglass Day Transcribe-a-thon
DESCRIPTION:Do you believe that history should be accessible to everyone? Can you read cursive? Then come to Windsor Historical Society Friday\, February 13th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to take part in the nationwide Douglass Day celebration! \nDouglass Day is an annual celebration Frederick Douglass’s legacy. Participants gather each year to communally transcribe documents from a Black history archives collection to help make them more widely accessible to researchers. This year\, participants will transcribe records from the Colored Conventions Project. The Colored Conventions include rich\, historical documents and debates that speak directly to the fight today to secure and preserve citizenship and civil rights. \n“Accessibility is crucial to the preservation of knowledge\,” says Windsor Historical Society program manager\, Heather Lodge. “By transcribing a handwritten letter\, you are not only making it so a teenager who cannot read cursive can access it\, but you are also making it easier to find in a database. This can mean the difference between a few people knowing a piece of history versus thousands.” \nWindsor Historical Society will host the transcribe-a-thon in their event space. Snacks and tech support will be provided. Participants must bring their own laptop or tablet. This event is drop in\, drop out. Transcribers may stay for as long or as short a time as they please. Participation is free. Preregistration is encouraged. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Wandering Windsor: Riverside Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, October 4\, 2025\, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.\, Windsor Historical Society will host a guided walking tour of Riverside Cemetery in Windsor\, Connecticut. Part of the Society’s popular Wandering Windsor series\, the tour will bring to life the history\, symbolism\, and stories behind one of Windsor’s most significant 19th-century cemeteries. \n“While not as old as Palisado Cemetery\, Riverside is special because it tells the story of tremendous social change here in Windsor\,” said Heather Lodge\, WHS Program Manager. “By exploring the lives of those buried there\, we uncover the ways that Windsor evolved into the diverse community we know today.” \nEstablished in 1887 as a part of Windsor’s Poor Farm\, Riverside quickly grew to welcome people from all walks of life\, including Civil War veterans\, European immigrants\, tradespeople from emerging industries\, and even a brewer who secretly continued his craft during Prohibition. \n$10 adult\, $8 member/senior\, $6 child. Pre-registration required. Rain or shine. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Celebrating the Civilian Conservation Corps: The 90th Anniversary of Camp Britton in Windsor
DESCRIPTION:Windsor Historical Society Hosts Talk on Civilian Conservation Corps and Windsor’s New Deal Legacy \nAuthor Martin Podskoch to discuss Windsor’s unique CCC camp and its role in New Deal conservation history on September 25 \nOn Thursday\, September 25 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.\, the Windsor Historical Society will present “Celebrating the Civilian Conservation Corps: The 90th Anniversary of Camp Britton in Windsor\,” a lecture by author and Connecticut Conservation Corps Museum Director Martin Podskoch. \nThe Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) began on March 31\, 1933 under President Roosevelt’s New Deal to relieve the poverty and unemployment of the Depression. Several CCC camps were set up in Connecticut\, including Camp Britton in Windsor. \nCamp Britton opened on September 12\, 1935. Affectionately known as “Camp Bug”\, it was not your average CCC camp. Beyond the usual forest improvements and park creation\, the camp worked in step with the Connecticut Agricultural Station to execute insect control and research. \nPodskoch’s talk will explore the origins of the CCC and the camp’s work in the Poquonock section of Windsor. Attendees will learn how Windsor’s CCC camp helped advance both environmental stewardship and scientific innovation during a pivotal era in American history. \nPre-registration encouraged. \n$10 adult\, $8 member/senior\, $6 child. \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Juneteenth Firelight Reading: Narrative of the Life and Adventures of Venture Smith
DESCRIPTION:Event will be held indoors\, due to inclement weather. \nGather around the fire at Windsor Historical Society on June 19th at 7:30 pm to observe Juneteenth. On grounds once walked by people enslaved in Windsor\, share in an audience-led reading of Venture Smith’s personal account of his life of slavery and freedom in 19th-century Connecticut. \nVenture Smith was named Broteer when he was born circa 1730\, in West Africa. As a child\, he was taken captive and sold into slavery in America. For 25 years\, he worked\, enslaved\, on farms in Connecticut\, New York\, and Rhode Island. In 1775\, Smith bought his freedom. He then strove for the next decade to purchase the freedom of his wife and three children\, reuniting his family and building a home in Haddam Neck\, CT.  Venture Smith’s story exemplifies the themes of slavery and freedom that lie at the heart of Juneteenth\, a day of celebration\, but also a day of remembrance. \nTake part and read the words or just listen to learn. All are welcome around the fire. This program is free. Ages 10 +. \nThis event is at capacity.
