Remembering the Tornado of 1979

On October 3, 1979, a devastating tornado hit the village of Poquonock in Windsor at 3 PM. Three people were killed, 143 hospitalized and 350 others were treated in emergency rooms. Sue Banks was one of the Poquonock residents at home with her children that afternoon. These are her memories from that day.

It came unexpectedly while people were picking apples, preparing dinner, coming home from school, and tending Windsor's tobacco crop. September 21st, 2018 marked the 80th anniversary of the Great Hurricane of 1938 that struck Windsor and New England for two hours late on a Wednesday afternoon.

Lifelong Windsor resident David J. Ellsworth (1840-1932) gave this account about the Blizzard of 1888 to a Windsor Historical Society meeting in November 1922, based on his own diary entries and personal memories of experiencing the blizzard.
