Layers of Home

January 14 - March 1, 2016

Again this year, Windsor High School’s Pre-AP Art students have been inspired by the historic architecture of Windsor’s Palisado Green, Palisado Cemetery, and Farmington River bridges. The twist for 2016 was that each student created a collage incorporating layers of their hometown. An exhibition of these collages created by the art students was held on Thursday, January 14th. The public was invited to an exhibit opening to meet these talented Windsor students and celebrate the connections they made between Windsor’s past, present, and future through their art.

WHS curator Christina Vida and Windsor High School art teacher Marjorie Renno guided the 11th-grade students as they toured their town, took digital images, and worked in the studio to craft their works of art. Each work included representations of architectural elements discovered on their walk through town as well as maps, sketches, and photographs. Physically experiencing historical artifacts, architecture, and landscape provided immediacy and inspiration. "Windsor has so many layers of history. It is wonderful to give students the chance to explore those layers and create their own meaning from the experience," noted Christina Vida.
