The Great Flood of 1936

Dark green scrapbook 10" x 13" filled primarily with newspaper clippings about the Flood of 1936. The handwritten title page reads "The Great Flood of 1936." Following the title page is a two-page typed letter, signed by Donald Holsworth, recounting his experience in Windsor during the flood. Another typed page titled "Thrills from the Flood" is unsigned, as is a handmade graph of the rise of the water. The rest of the pages are filled with articles and photographs cut from the Hartford Courant and the Hartford Times. The scrapbook has green front and back boards and is bound with yarn. Cover title also indicates Hurricane of Sept. 1938 articles are included. Large tan scrapbook entitled "Clippings of Historical Interest and Value to Windsor and Vicinity", made by Louis W. H. Gradisky in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and given to Mary E. Moore, Mabel C. Moore, and Helen Moore after his death. It was then given to Leland P. Wilson, who finished it and donated it in 1958. Contains newspaper clippings about old Windsor houses, photography, significant events, landscape, historical objects, and Windsor history.

A large brown scrapbook 11.5" x 11/5" with gold decorative border design on the cover. The scrapbook contains materials about Windsor's 350th anniversary celebration, and was created by the Publicity Chairperson Colette (Mrs. Merwin) Brown. It contains newspaper clippings from September 1982-May 1983. Clippings focus primarily on Windsor history and events scheduled for the celebration. Also contains a letter from the Robert Silliman and the 350th anniversary committee about a walk from Dorchester to Windsor, a letter from the Windsor Public Library about genealogical research, rules for preparing news releases, a list of civic organizations, clergy, Parent Teacher Organization presidents, fire companies, and industries in Windsor in 1981, letters from Poquonock School about an Ancient Windsor unit that would be taught in May 1983, and the February 1983 and April 1983 Windsor Historical Society newsletters.

Windsor's 350th Anniversary

A large red scrapbook 11" x 12" with gold fleur-de-lis motifs within a crosshatched design. The album contains materials about Windsor's 350th Anniversary Celebrations. It was created by the Publicity Chairperson, Colette (Mrs. Merwin) Brown. It includes newspaper clippings from May-August 1983. Clippings mostly focus on the history of Windsor or the schedule of events for the celebration. Also includes a program for the Town Tomorrow Conference held on June 20-21, 1983 at Loomis Chaffee, a copy of the June 1983 issue of "Tempo" (Royal Business Machines), the June 1983 Windsor Historical Society newsletter, a worksheet called "Great Escape to History", and the August 1983 issue of "Automobiler" (AAA).

Also contains two tickets to the 350th Anniversary Ball, a booklet entitled "Windsor 350", the Congressional Record for September 15, 1983, certificates commending Robert T. Silliman, parade participants, and others who contributed to the celebration, a flyer for the 10k road race, a facsimile stock certificate for Oil City Co., an invitation to the "Olde Fashioned Spelling Bee" at Sage Park Middle School, the March 1983 advertising supplement to the Hartford Courant, and a number of items relating to the Founder's Day Observances on September 24, 1983.

Marguerite E. Mills Scrapbook, 1908-1980

Scrapbook donated by Marguerite Mills. Brown cover with green border decoration around the center. Contains items from 1908 until 1980. Newspaper clippings include obituaries, wedding and engagement announcements, photos of Windsor houses, and articles on the Flood of 1936. Other items include a 1980 thank you note from Becky Henricks for a donation to First Church, a 1910 letter to Marguerite's mother Kate Phelps Mills from Eunice L. Morgan, and a 1951 journal record from Amherst, MA.

Windsor History Scrapbook

Large scrapbook devoted to Windsor's history. Tan, black, red, and gold cover with an image of a wolf and a bird on the cover. 12 1/2" x 15" x 1 1/4". At least one of the items was collected by Annie E. Porter, and several others were collected by Marguerite Mills. Contains newspaper clippings about Windsor's history, notably the Bissell Ferry, Old Palisado, Charter Oak, the Ellsworths, and the first Hartford Bridge. Also contains old documents, including: a certificate for Daniel Porter from the Washington National Monument Society; a certificate for Elihu Case from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions; papers promoting Daniel Porter to captain of the tenth infantry of the first regiment of the militia in 1848; a photocopy of discharge papers for Daniel Porter from the 2nd Connecticut regiment in 1783; sketch map of property of Daniel and Roger Phelps in 1778; papers promoting Roger Phelps, Jr. to 3rd sergeant in 1810, and a deed for Eliza Ann Harris from Elija Denslow. The end of the book contains several cross-stitched pieces.

Brown scrapbook. 8 1/2" x 13" x 3/4". Tied together with a piece of brown string along the left side. "Scrap book" is printed on the front inside a decorative medallion. A border of leaves and flowers is imprinted along the edges of the cover. Contains obituaries of Windsor residents. Members of the Ellsworth, Hayden, Phelps, Morgan, Mills, Clapp, Pratt, Sill, Brown, Bestor, Welch, Wilson, and Drake families documented. Possibly accumulated by Marguerite Mills.

Marguerite Mills Scrapbook

Black scrapbook with mother of pearl inlay belonging to Marguerite Mills. Cover has a large, mother of pearl flower in the center and bordered in decorative lines of gold and mother of pearl. There's a white pearl-like bead sitting at each corner. The spine is missing. 9 1/4" x 12" x 1".

Scrapbook contains newspaper and magazine clippings from 1950-1980, as well as valentine's and birthday cards from around the 1880s. All of the cards and clippings are loose inside the book.

Scrapbook is tied along the left side with a dark brown string. Contains cards and letters sent to Catherine Phelps Mills, the mother of the donor, Marguerite Mills. Most items are birthday cards sent to Mills on her 85th birthday in 1952.

World War II Red Cross

Scrapbook prepared by Paula Jensen Morse, Vice Chairman, American Red Cross, Windsor, CT. Period covered 1941-1944 10" x 12.5" scrapbook, 66 leaves, with a full page illustration of children saluting the American flag with the words "Our America" on the cover. The illustration has disintegrated and only the upper left portion is remaining; the illustration was pasted onto the front of a pale green scrapbook. The volume includes miscellaneous newspaper clippings and memorabilia about the Emergency Committee of the American Red Cross in Windsor, Conn. during World War II. The 1945 Report of the Windsor Branch, American national Red Cross, Windsor, Connecticut is also included.

A Windsor Woman during World War II

A scrapbook titled "A Windsor Woman during World War II" compiled by Martha Manchester Menard, a member of the Hartford (Conn.) Chapter of the American National Red Cross Motor Corps. The book records her years of service as an ambulance driver in the Hartford area from 1943-1945. Photographs, newspaper clippings, identification cards, Red Cross certifications, letters and certificates document her training and service. Several pages contain newspaper accounts of the Hartford Circus Fire July 6, 1944.

Scrapbook holds a miscellaneous collection of mostly trade (advertising cards). There are also business cards, calling cards, illustrations cut out of books, and reward of merit cards presented to David Marshall. Also included is a set of twelve trade cards issued by Clarence Brooks & Co., Manufacturers of Fine Coach, Railway & Piano Forte Varnishes with exaggerated and stylized caricatures of African-American people.

Bernard Butryman Scrapbook

Approximately 25 pages of newspaper clippings about people, sites and stories predominantly relating to Windsor and Hartford. Some of the newspaper articles featured historic photos of Windsor, Hartford, or Wethersfield in a "Then and Now" format. There is also an 11" x 14" portrait of an unidentified man. These items are all contained in a 14" x 17" Middlesex artist's sketch book and were collected by Bernard Butryman.

The cover page features a cut-out of a marching band and the hand-printed title "Gray-Dickinson Post # 59. A. L. of Windsor, Conn. History of Year 1936-1937. Compiled by Eleanor S. Higgins." All Hands Working: Stories, Legends and Lore of Windsor's Fire Companies

A general history and collection of articles pertaining to the Fire Companies of Windsor. The compilation is entitled "All Hands Working: Stories, Legends and Lore of Windsor's Fire Companies Windsor, Wilson, Poquonock, Hayden Station." Photocopied newspaper articles are chronologically arranged and divided into time periods; 1785-1920, 1920-1930, 1930-1940, 1940-1950, 1950 to the present [1996]. It is contained in a 2 1/4" binder covered in clear plastic. A computer generated title page features a black and white illustration of an antique piece of fire apparatus. Research materials for an exhibit curated by Cherie Sweeney at the Windsor Historical Society which was on display Fall 1996 thru Spring 1997.

Windsor Veterans Battalion Scrapbook

Scrapbook created by the Windsor Veterans Battalion of the Civil War containing records of the organization from April 1920 until June 1948. The group was comprised of about twenty sons of Windsor veterans in 1920 and in 1938 about 45 men are listed, some of whom are grandsons of veterans. The records include lists of officers and members, minutes of meetings, programs from Memorial Day exercises, financial records, and newspaper clippings. In the front of the volume is a 1916 photograph of the Windsor Veterans sitting on the north side of the Town Hall in Windsor. It was taken by William S. Leek and is accompanied by a slip of paper identifying the men as: L-R first row: Charles F. Lewis, Wm. O. Buckley, Wm. Howard, Edmund A. Green, Osbert Palmer, Alfred Deming, David F. Memories of the Year 1941 and 1942 with President Marguerite Mead: American Auxiliary Scrapbook

12" x 12 3/4" scrapbook with hard, off-white embossed covers with a cut-out of the American flag pasted on the front. Includes memorabilia of the presidency of Marguerite Mead in the Windsor chapter of the American Auxiliary including newspaper clippings, programs, pressed flowers, postcards, cards, invitations, letters, paper plates & napkins, handwritten names of members. Pages are brittle. Marguerite Mead was the donor's aunt, who resided at 92 Lovell Ave. in Windsor. She died in 1984. The scrapbook was compiled by Marion Bill and Eleanor Higgins.

Ebenezer Grant Mansion, East Windsor Hill, Conn.

This red scrapbook has a large circle on the front cover with decorations of diamond and curving elements around it. In the center of the circle is a typed label identifying it as "Ebenezer Grant Mansion East Windsor Hill, Conn." The album has a yellow binding. Inside are grey pages of cardstock bound with 1 inch red covered cardboard and 2 screw pins. Each page of cardstock has either an image, photocopy or article on one side of the paper. The first image is the original photograph of the 2003.028.014.010 copy, a woman in the doorway of the Grant house. Other materials included are several photocopies of Grant documents, some legal documents, others financial, including the types of cargo being shipped by the Grant merchants. A drawing of the house and related material are included as well. Newspaper articles relating to the sale of the homestead, declaration of it being named to the National Register of Historic Places and an article documenting Maude Grant Howarth's furniture, from the Grant house, that has travelled with the family to Providence, R.I. are included in the album.

Scrapbook containing Graduation programs, Orders of Exercises, Class Night programs, lists of graduates, etc. The programs are affixed with tape hinges or glued to the scrapbook pages. Several loose items include duplicate copy of the graduating exercises for the Class of 1896 and 1911 and a Monthly Report card for Miss K. F. Daniel Howard Scrapbook

Scrapbook of original documents relating to Windsor history and events collected by Daniel Howard at the time of the 300th Anniversary of the founding of Windsor in 1933 and the Connecticut State Tercentenary in 1935. Documents are dated 1697-1851, although most are from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Items include bills and receipts, lists of polls and estates, complaints, warrants, lists of supplies and provisions, printed Acts & Laws of the General Assembly, and correspondence. An brief index was included at the end of the scrapbook and a more detailed listing has been compiled for the finding aid and is available in the library.

Girl Scouting Memorabilia During the World War II Years

Scrapbook entitled "Girl Scouting Memorabilia During the World War II Years". Has a yellow cover with a Girl Scout in the center, and the words "My, F. Evelyn Smith Scrap Book". Contains newspaper clippings about the Windsor Girl Scouts, invitations to troop activities, transcripts of two radio programs in which Evelyn spoke, letters to Evelyn from counselors, troop leaders, and the Red Cross, pictures of Troop #155 and of Evelyn's uniform and badges, several Girl Scout membership cards, a 1940 registration list for Windsor Brownie Troop #137, a copy of Mrs. Donald S. Wilson Congregational Church Historian's Scrapbook

Scrapbook made by Jeannette S. Zorro, historian of Wilson Congregational Church. Large brown album with gold diamond pattern along the top and bottom edges, 12" x 15". The scrapbook documents the history of the Wilson Congregational Church from its foundation in 1900 until 1977. The scrapbook contains historical sketches, programs, newspaper clippings, and photographs, and the items are mostly in chronological order. Zorro has added her own annotations and captions for some of the items.

Clapp Family Scrapbook

Brown cloth-covered scrapbook 11" x 14" x 3" thick primarily compiled by Theodore Clapp, although it appears several persons assembled different portions. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings dated between 1893 and 1943, in particular including ones about the 100th anniversary of the first train coming to Hartford, the Hartford earthquake of November 19, 1929, a history of Hartford's rivers and bridges, the hailstorm of August 2, 1929, and a first person reminiscence of "Windsor As I Knew It When a Boy." It also contains postcards, photographs, letters, and other ephemera. Additional accounts penned by the creator include first hand accounts of the flood of March 1926 (with photos) and the Hurricane of 1938, a genealogical family tree of David Ellsworth (born 1782) and Ellsworth/Hayden family lines, and property transfer documents. Some of the later materials have been attached on top of the earlier records.

Leila's Scrapbook

Small brown scrapbook 6.25" x 8" with the words "Scrap Book" in an Art Deco style on the cover in gold. The child's scrapbook contains religious and floral cards and animal stickers. Created by "Leila". There are also images of two buildings (Machinery Hall and the Horticultural Hall) at the International Exposition held in Philadelphia in 1876.

My Scrapbook

Large red scrapbook 11" x 14" with images of vases embossed on the cover. Contains greeting cards, calling cards, religious cards, advertising trade cards, and stickers probably collected by a child and pasted into the scrapbook. Several are cards from the 1883 Youth's Companion. There is a pair of 5 x 7" portraits of an unidentified man and woman.

Windsor, Connecticut 1916-1918

Thick scrapbook with marbled red and blue cover. Contains newspaper clippings about Windsor. Topics include Boy Scouts, the Fire Company, Methodist and St. Gabriel's churches, 1916 Windsor High School graduates, automobile accidents and the Windsor "death trap", theater, and the Windsor Home Guard. Also contains an invitation to the opening of the Tunxis River Canoe Club in 1916, a program for the Memorial Day services on May 30, 1916, a notice from General Electric about a system for canceling school in stormy weather, a statement and report for the Windsor Trust and Safe Deposit Company, handouts from the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and the Committee of Food Supply, handwritten list of members in the Windsor Fire Co. 1916-1917, and a letter to "Carl" from the Office of Selectmen.

Black scrapbook with "U-File-M Scrapbook" written in gold on the cover. Contains newspaper clippings about Windsor from May 20-September 18, 1918. The clippings are laid out on top of each other two columns, and are secured with binder strips so that each clipping can be turned like a page. The clippings from June 3-June 15 appear to be missing.

Burgundy scrapbook with the words "Connecticut Fire Insurance Company of Hartford Conn." written in gold on the cover. The inside cover says "Port Royal, Pa." Contains newspaper clippings from 1886-1888 about Windsor citizens, including many mentions of William C. Grompf and the Good Samaritans. Also contains a programme, some typed notes, flyers, and two papers supporting Charles W. Cooper's attempts to get a liquor license for the "Hotel Windsor" in spite of Grompf and the Good Samaritans, signed E.N. Phelps, F.F. Curry, O.W. Thrall, A.W. Plumb, and W. R. Best.
