and

Slide Show:  New Englandís Major Leaguers

August 18        1 - 4 p.m.

Can you name the Windsor native who was the unexpected pitching hero of the 1966 World Series?  The Connecticut-born first baseman who drove in 144 runs in his rookie year with the Red Sox, but who never had more than 79 RBIs in a single season after that?  The two Connecticut natives who were chosen in the same college draft by the Sox, and the one who went on to be named Most Valuable Player?

To find out who they were, join us at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 18 for a slide presentation by Roger Kolb, "New England's Major Leaguers:  The Search for the All-Time New England Nine." This program is sponsored by PC Development.  Mr. Kolb will make a position-by-position survey of the baseball players from New England who became famous Major Leaguers, and will relate fascinating and in some cases little-known facts about each.   See where Carlton Fisk, Tony Conigliaro and Jimmy Piersall grew up.  Find out who the oldest player was to hit safely in the All-Star game, and how, on the day when one of the great Boys of Summer, Clem Labine, tried out for the Boston Braves, he ended up signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers!

A native of Long Island, Roger Kolb is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, where he majored in history.  Journalist, radio announcer, and librarian, he is the founder of New England Armchair Tours and the co-author of a nonfiction book about music, The Robert J. Lurtsema Musical Quiz Book.

We invite local baseball memorabilia collectors of all ages to display gloves, bats, pennants, cards, autographs, and more from 1-4 p.m.  (Collectors:  Please call Christine Ermenc or Liz Hoffman at 688-3813 to reserve a 6 foot table.  You must provide someone to stay at your table during this time.)  Program admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and $4 for WHS members which covers admission to the Societyís exhibitions and historic homes including the Over There, Windsor and World War I exhibition.  Parking is available around Palisado Green and in the First Church and Windsor Discovery Center parking lots.
